Multilingual Document Sets in your eSearch/Document Review Project

Across Europe, it is common that people will communicate and create content in more than one language. Even if a company’s main language is German, there is a likely hood that employees will talk to customers, suppliers, or industry colleagues in another language than German.

When a legal issue develops, a lawyer is faced with having to plan a strategy for tackling the eSearch/Review exercise without knowing what languages have been used in the targeted document sets.

Lawyers, be honest, can you ever know all the languages within the document set at the start of your mandate. How do you plan your search method?

At LTI, clients' document sets contain multiple languages for almost every project we support lawyers with.

At the very beginning of a mandate, once we have started to handle the data, our software (powered by Reveal Brainspace) detects and displays what language is used within each document. Even if a document contains more than one language (say Dutch and French), both the languages will be identified and reported.

The number of documents and the languages within is clearly presented (see image above). Note: this is a standard process for us and comes at no extra cost…

While this is great, you might say to yourself ‘we have no one on the team who can speak Polish and we will have to inform the client that we need to collaborate with another office or law firm to search and review the Polish documents’. This may possibly end up being the need.  However, we can get you started right away on the Polish (or any other language) documents so you can get an idea of any relevance/questions.

Our platform will translate documents in bulk (tens of thousands at a time) or one by one. By selecting the Polish language document set (or any language), directly within the platform, the contents are translated from Polish into any other language (German, French, English etc.).

Once the translations have been performed, the original content and the newly translated content is made searchable and reviewable. You are also able to print the translated content so it can be used in your witness files or for other reasons.

How much does it cost? We do not charge any per document or gigabyte fee for translation. You can perform the task yourself or we will work with you to drive the processes.

In one recent case, we translated over 100,000 documents in one day (machine time) and it took us less than 3 hours of support time (billable time) to get everything ready. The client said they were previously charge overd €20,000 for a similar exercise… Sadly, we do not charge €6,666 per hour.
